Background:
Dexter was born the son of Hikida Hyoujun and Natsuke Kudo. Like his mother, he is somewhat of an oddball in the Hyoujun Clan as a result of his inability to manifest their bloodline. This was thought to be influenced by the Kudo half of his family, but he has proven unable to manifest their bloodline as well, making the state of affairs even more curious.
Dexter actually showed relatively little talent as a ninja in addition to his lack of any type of bloodline to speak of. This bothered him greatly, coming from two clans with prominent numbers of ninja. Instead, he found himself focusing heavily on his machinations, thinking he could compensate for subpar ability with superior equipment.
To a degree, that worked. Through supplementation of his physical abilities with advanced items he developed himself, he was able to survive being a genin and a chuunin, right into becoming a jounin. However, he was constantly aware of his shortcomings, and had to stay one step ahead of his enemies in the battlefield, even compared to the one step ahead a normal ninja would otherwise already be.
What he realized was that it would be nearly impossible to overcome enemies in a direct competition of strength and skill, and that he had to fight smarter, not harder. As such, he has developed an arsenal of weapons specially chosen to target weak areas various shinobi have, exploiting their vulnerabilities to his advantage and finding those vulnerabilities through trial and error.
When he was a chuunin, Dex began to study under another talented inventor, Doctor Raphael Ryuuko. Raphael taught Dexter medical skills, in addition to helping him improve upon his machinations. When Raphael died at the hands of an over-zealous ANBU, his entire personal estate and all of his inventions were left to Dexter, whom became the head researcher for Hoshi Industries in Raphael’s place.
