Combat Changes.... Again

As you are all well aware, there were some very big changes to combat recently. I am here to shed some light on that.

First and foremost I would like to apologize for all these big changes coming out so soon and changing the landscape of combat that most of us have gotten used to, but I promise its for the better. As the game grows and we get more and more of our features added in, we’ve reached a bottleneck in terms of what we can add to the game while keeping things balanced from a numbers perspective.

With each addition to combat i.e. Skill Tree, Items, More Jutsus, Keystones (sorry), etc, there has been a steady increase in power and it's finally reached that nexus point of change must be done. We were presented with 3 options:

1. Make a sweeping change to the codebase and change how tags interact with each other. This would have been the most invasive change and would have lowered damage output tremendously, and would have required a lot of updates to jutsus and the like, and would require a bit of investment from Terr which means it would not be a quick process and would not have addressed the immediate concern that we were faced with.

2. Lowering the numbers of basically everything across the board OR increasing HP to 10k, which while it would address the issues now, it would just be kicking the can down the road. Let tomorrow’s content team handle it.

3. We do what we are currently doing and have mostly completed doing. What is that you may ask? It's changing a lot of values to being static and adding stats to armor instead of working with the ballooning percentage values we’ve known and love.

What does this mean for the players?

At the macro level, nothing changes, damage numbers might be slightly skewed, but overall combat has not changed. However, you will come to find that quite a lot of jutsus have had their DoTs changed to either static values or the new Afterburn tag. The reason for this is that as we transition to using Inc Stats for damage boost on armor, we realized that this would have the unintended effect of causing residual damage to explode. To combat this, we made the choice of going with static residual values. This makes it easier for you to know exactly what you get out of using a jutsu with residual, as well as making it so that the Stat Inc/Dec tags have more value outside of just “This makes DoTs stronger”

It also means that armor and damage reduction plays a much larger role in combat now. Damage numbers have gone up because stats have a bigger weight in the damage formula now and with that, it means that increasing your defensive stats, lowering your opponent’s defensive stats, increasing your damage reduction or lowering your opponent’s damage given will be pivotal in combat. I know its going to take some getting used to, but we genuinely believe that this is the best course of action to take for the future of the game. These should be the last sweeping changes for the foreseeable future, sans balance updates and numbers adjustments.

It also means that your builds can be a lot more unique as well with a lot more diversity and a lot more viable options for combat. We’re still in the early stages so some things might be a little bit off and we ask that you bear with us. Things might seem foreign and wonky now, but it will be very easy to get used to and should be a lot more apparent what value armors bring.

From the entire content, I want to apologize to you the players for blindsiding you with these changes. If you have any questions, this news post will be made as a forum post in the discord linked here so that we can hopefully have a healthy discourse on the matter and be transparent with you, and so that you guys can understand our reasoning behind them.

Thank you for, hopefully, understanding. Next on your list of upcoming combat related features… Crafting…Coming soon to a TNR near you.
